Top 10 Resources for New Ostomates

Whether you just got your surgery recently or you’ve had it for a while, here are some great resources for you! Trying as many things as possible helps a great deal.

  1. United Ostomy Associations of America: Like this Facebook page to receive updates on UOAA activities and learn more about this great organization. They offer education materials, support groups and conferences. They also have an intro magazine with a food list that many people find helpful. Within this group, you can learn a lot from other patients.

  2. The Phoenix magazine has stories, ads for new products, and advice columns to answer your questions.

  3. Ostomy 101: This app and website has support group resources and it’s great to help you learn more about ostomies. They offer classes, education and event listings.

  4. Kindred Box: If you have unneeded supplies, send them over to Kindred Box, where they help people who are having trouble getting what they need.

  5. YouTube: We are trying to make as many videos as possible that answer questions, and we do Livestreams on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter most Thursdays.

  6. Coping Mechanisms for Anxiety: Here is a list of different coping mechanisms you can use when you’re frustrated and feeling down
  7. Girls with Guts: This volunteer group offers in person retreats, educational
    events, blogs, and amazing support for all women. I keep going back because I find that personal time very valuable and I gain friends that correspond for years

  8. Stealth Belt Support Group: In this moderated forum, people can ask questions from other members and share inspiration for each other.

  9. Sample out all different types of ostomy bags from different manufacturers. Visit their website to request free samples and take advantage of their amazing care programs!
